The "British Raj" was basically a stage of India, where it was colonized by the British. It started in 1859 and ended on the 15th of August in 1947. India wasn't the only country conquered by it though, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar were also included. But how did the British conquer the entire Indian subcontinent?
It started when some British people had a company, now known as the East-India company. They were like, "We own this bit of area". And some OTHER companies were also like, "We own this bit of area too". And then they exported stuff! And then some other COUNTRIES were also like, "We own this bit of area three". The countries were France, The Netherlands, and Portugal. The four countries had occupied land in the south. The Mughal empire did have control over the south but was pretty much being bullied by Persia and other empires, so it lost a bit of land, and by a bit of land, I mean almost half the entire empire. If this hadn't happened, the other countries probably wouldn't have been able to take parts of the Indian subcontinent.
Now for the fun part, there was another empire called the Maratha empire, and was really strong, like, really strong. In the meantime, the British empire got some juicy profit from the exports and made its own army, and had a ton of men from its incredibly powerful navy. At this point, the countries aren't even worth to be mentioned. The British empire now had its own military! Well, the other countries had a military too, but they were a bit inferior. With the British military, they were able to defeat the Bengals and now held a chunk of the Indian subcontinent in the north. France has now kicked off the continent! Yay!
By this point, the British took over the Mughal empire and all the land in the south, including the Netherlands in Sri Lanka. Now the only country to be kicked off the island was Portugal and the Maratha empire was still left to conquer. Then after, they did it! They took over the sub-continent and kicked off Portugal. But hey, the blood isn't over yet! The British stole the resources from India and famine occurred. India and other countries got independence though, so happy ending?
Wow, the British really were jerks!
